Vladimir Janda was a clinician, researcher, and educator well known around the world. His theories of muscle imbalance served as the basis for evaluation and treatment of patients throughout Europe, giving him the title “Father of Rehabilitation.” As he lectured in the United States and other parts of the world, he developed an interdisciplinary following of physiotherapists, chiropractors, and physicians. His results cannot be denied.
Janda’s approach provides a unique perspective on rehabilitation. In contrast to the traditional structural view of rehabilitation, Janda suggested a more functional approach by emphasizing the importance of the sensorimotor system in controlling movement and in chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes. His theories were so revolutionary that he was often years ahead of science.
Janda’s ideas have revolutionized our approach to treating patients with chronic pain, often the most difficult patients to treat. At Global Health Solutions, we implement Janda’s theories in everyday clinical practice, offering Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF): Its Mechanisms and Effects on Range of Motion and Muscular Function.
